Blog Takeover: The girls of Verily Magazine

Hello IHOD readers! This is Kara Eschbach, Editor in Chief of the newly launched Verily Magazine, a fashion & lifestyle magazine focused on starting fresh conversations on authentic womanhood. Anna was kind enough to let us take over IHOD for the day to introduce ourselves, so here are a few things we think you should know about us!

“Why start a new women’s magazine? Aren’t there enough already?”
There are a bunch of women’s magazines, no doubt about it. And yet, when the topic of women’s magazines came up over brunch one day, all the women at the table agreed that the current slate on the market didn’t reflect how we felt about ourselves or the trajectory of our lives. It wasn’t the topics so much that seemed off—we love fashion and relationships and pop culture—but the way that these topics were approached didn’t fit with what we had experienced as actually leading us closer to being happy, healthy, integrated people. So instead of just complaining, we decided to start something new.

“What’s it like to start a magazine?”
To be completely honest – it’s a ton of work! Throughout out the process, we’ve all had other jobs to tend to during the day, and I only started working on this full time at the end of 2011. So I’m the one working with the printer, coordinating with lawyers, doing customer service, updating the website, as well as working with the editors to get content, edit articles, and generally figure out what needs to get done. We all get to wear a lot of different hats, but it’s been a great opportunity to work with wonderful women and build a space that is truly the “change we want to see in the world.”

“What wouldn’t we know about the editors just by reading the magazine or following on Twitter?”
> Kara is known for her one-liners, frequent use of idiomatic phrases, and for laughing a lot, especially at herself.
> Janet is the one to notice the little moments of beauty, from a particularly vibrant flower to the best sunsets, even when we're in a rush.
> Mary Rose is the feisty one, who rocks a quirky, feminine style—she wore an amazing fascinator to Krizia’s wedding!
> Ashley is an enthusiastic advocate for completing her bucket list—she’s always planning an adventure, from looking for a new coffee shop to traveling the world.
> Krizia is a purveyor of all things cute and a tech whiz—she’s even built a robot!

“What do you think makes Verily different?”
Verily is all about being real women – the best versions of ourselves, but still being ourselves, and not being afraid to embrace the womanly aspects that make us unique. We’re starting conversations that truly respect women, sharing stories that aren’t being covered elsewhere, and treating women to content that acknowledges them as the intelligent, thoughtful, fun people they are.

The most encouraging thing for us is when we hear feedback that reading the magazine made someone say, “Yes, that’s so true!” We hope that Verily will help build up a positive culture of community for women, not just within the pages of the magazine or online, but to inspire our readers to share it with others in how they live. Just our way of making the world a little bit better.

  4. What a refreshing concept for a woman's publication -- so beautiful and unique. The only fashion magazine I subscribe to is InStyle because it's the only one I can tolerate, but it looks like I may be canceling it and getting on board with Verily. Wishing you lots of success! I know the publishing world is tough, particularly these days, but it looks like you've got a great product.
