First Trimester Survival Kit

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of the whole pregnancy process. Give me all the babies in the world, but can I skip the 9 mo. of uncomfortable and strange??

That being said, I have learned a good lesson or two these past few years after witnessing good friends go through the loss of their pregnancies, infertility, and even the loss of their newborns. I have shut up the complaining and turned it into a whole lot of gratitude that I even have this gift of life inside of me. The rest is miniscule. I have friends who love the whole pregnancy experience too. What about you?

However... I still unashamedly seek those little comforts to help out with the non graceful moments of my first trimester and beyond... and these my friends are my top products that got me through the last icky winter months...

Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer  - Since I am terrible at keeping up with a skin care regimen (this happens when you don't have time to think of what you look like until you run into a mirror), I try to do at least one thing right.  In the summer, all I use is tinted moisturizer with an spf, in the winter, this tall drink of water for the skin makes me feel like I am preserving dignity and grace in the shape of a moisturizer bottle. Its the best I have tried so far. Now to figure out a good product for the sudden pregnancy breakout parties that happen on my forehead..

Benefit They're Real Mascara - I don't wear a lot of makeup. I only have time for the basics, so mascara is my favorite tool to feeling awake and ready to go. I have tried every drugstore mascara (favorite being cover girl), and spent a good while at the mascara bar at Sephora. The result of the endless pursuit? This guy. It converted me from my $5 ways because it outshined and outlasted. Second runners up - Tarte and Urban Decay.

Teavana and Herbal Tea, 4oz - I drank a cup of joe a day with Gabriel and Veronica (they turned out fine!) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Due to a stomach condition, I can no longer have caffein (or any of life's greatest pleasures for that matter like wine and chocolate). I have mourned and moved on, and discovered that tea is actually an incredible stomach soother, mental booster, and nerve calmer. Who knew?? My sister gave me Teavana tea for Christmas, and my brother gave me a tea cup with strainer. Its been the most used gift yet. Lipton's Backberry Vanilla tea is fantastic - at your local grocery store.

Super B Complex and Magnesium - Thank you Grace for this life saving tip! We both are on the anemic side during pregnancy, so she recommended Blood Booster and Magnesium. I started taking these, B-complex, and pre-natals of course. (I know its a lot, but I don't have time to be drowsy) These have helped immensely with my energy levels. It was worth the money to me to buy the extra sources of energy and good health for both me and the baby.

Yonanas Frozen Treat Maker - When I am feeling sick to my stomach, or don't feel like eating in general. Smoothies, popsicles, or ice cream will always lure me. My MIL gave us this Yonana for Christmas and its been our favorite contraption in the kitchen. Straight sorbet from just frozen fruit! Its kept me away from indulging in too much ice cream as well. Plus! We add a little greek yogurt as well.

Microwaveable Herbal Heating Pad- I would have never thought to buy this for myself, but Gabe customized one from this shop as a birthday gift one year, and I have used it more times than I can count. It has been relief for headaches, cramps, and stomach issues. The herbal scent is divine and provides immediate aromatherapy relief.  I have used this throughout my pregnancies:)

I hope this helps some of you entering into pregnancy bliss (insert a little sarcasm- I can't help myself.) Each person's experience is so different, I would love to hear what worked for you?

  1. Congratulations on #3! I'm expecting #3, but I'm in the process of exiting pregnancy -- just 6 more weeks to go.

I really don't have much advice on surviving the first trimester. I tell myself I'll be better prepared next go around with frozen meals etc., but it never happens and I just end up winging it. We survive and hubby always steps up to the plate.

For my second and third trimesters, I decided to embrace leggings and it's the best decision I've made -- they're so much more comfortable than maternity jeans. I purchase some tunic tops and riding boots and I feel put together and comfortable -- well as comfortable one can be at 34 weeks!

Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months!

    1. Ann,
Winging it is right! So thankful for Gabe who understands and tries so hard to help when he can.
And thankfully, I got on board with tunics for the last pregnancy and they were a lifesaver!
Hope you have a smooth last few weeks!

  2. I thought I was in the team of those who really enjoy the pregnancy thingy. My first one was brilliant - I had mild morning sickness and hated coffee (which I am addicted to) and chicken. Other than that, I absolutely adored how my hair and skin got so glossy and smooth and perfect, loved my bump, the whole thing was a dream.

Now that I am 21 weeks pregnant, I just now am enjoying having a little one inside me - I was crazy sick (all day long), now I have strong heartburns, my trousers don't fit anymore, my skin and hair are horrible. At least now I am feeling her moving about and I adore this feeling - it's only when I felt the baby moving that I actually felt I'm going to be mom again; and I love this feeling.

Congratulations on the pregnancy - having children around us is like being in paradise! :-)

    1. Oh how wonderful is that moving baby! Nothing like it. Its a reward for the uncomfortable part;)
Heartburn is the worst! I hope it goes okay these last few months!
You are right, having little ones around is wonderful. Even though it can be a challenge emotionally and physically, they make every day worth getting up!

  4. First trimester really is THE hardest. I found running made me less nauseated and I could eat whatever after without getting sick. It was one of the only things that got me through!

    1. Anne, running is a saving grace for me, and sadly, had no time or motivation this time around.
I am determined to make it happen in the next few months:)

    2. I wish I could continue running through my pregnancies, but even just a few weeks in, I feel like I have to pee with every step so I just switch to walking and the elliptical trainer. I keep up with weight training -- with the appropriate modifications -- which really helps keep back soreness at bay. I definitely feel better when I exercise during my pregnancies.

  8. Love this post! First trimester is so brutal I try anything and everything! With Nicholas' pregnancy last year I discovered the Unisom/B6 combo and it made life bearable during first trimester. Just found out baby# 3 is due in September so it's time to stock up on B vitamins, tea and citrus! I have to keep reminding myself to be thankful that the first is the worst and is gets better from there. Congrats Anna!!

  9. I haven't been following as much as I used to, but your post about 1st trimester helps lured me in. Especially since I have a coworker that is pregnant for the first time. I had no idea you were pregnant with #3! Congrats!

  10. I loved every minute of my first pregnancy; but I was really miserable with my pregnancy with the twins, my second pregnancy (it was complicated from the get go). Real lemonade was the best when I was queasy and I always kept fruit cut up and would eat a handful throughout the day to keep me feeling better.
I also lived with a heating pad on low on my back during the last trimester.
I think the best thing when one is feeling a little down or tired during the end of pregnancy is to just sit and put your hands on your belly and enjoy the movements in your belly. There is nothing more special than feeling those little kicks inside of you!!

    1. I am dreaming about real lemonade now! And there is nothing more therapeutic than time with the babies movements inside of you:)

  11. You ready for my ramble? ;) Love talking babies and pregnancy.
I have got nothing on the beauty topic....my skin becomes a nightmare during pregnancy and I think I turn more green than glow and I am at peace with that BUT I do have a goal to get a current prescription of eye glasseswith my next pregnancy because I get incredibly dry eyes while pregnant and can not stand wearing contacts.
Second, love b-complex while pregnant and have heard about the magnesium so def going to jump on board with that!
Nana got us the Yobanana's too and we love it. Freezer is stocked with frozen fruit. ;) I am sure we will be using it daily this summer.
My goal for our next one is to try to eat healthier, which is unbelievably hard with all day sickness but I feel like a stronger person than a few years ago. Maybe it will happen? Mind over matter? Prayer? Constant Prayer. haha. All I know is that as much as a dislike pregnancy, I would do it over and over again for those sweet little babies! Congrats on making it through the first trimester! :)
    Lastly, more baby/pregnancy posts? Please?

  12. Eee Anna this is all so exciting! And I love Kiehl's products. They make me feel really luxurious without spending a TON of money. And I like that they're made for sensitive skin, so nothing will make my skin freak out :)

  13. What a perfect list! I love that mascara as well, and you can never go wrong with Teavana tea. So excited for you!

  15. Yonanas? why haven't I heard of this miracle machine?!? Going to definitely get this for future pregnancies. I know Marshal will thank-you for this, because I literally had him running out for Icy's every night during my last two pregnancies. Also, Love the pregnancy posts.

  16. Thank you for sharing! Will look into those supplements and the Kiehls moisturizer is awesome! My husband & I are planning this year to get pregnant too perhaps towards the end of the year.:))

  18. I was so, so sick my first trimester. My tricks were great WATERPROOF mascara (since I would get weepy eyes at work while regurgitating my food), bronzer and highlighter to add life back into my face, and mint hand lotion, so I could put it on my hands and swipe a little under my nose while everyone was heating up their leftover chinese at work.

sigh, so glad to be done with that phase, although mine last until 21 weeks!

  19. I need to get some of the B-complex vitamins... for the end of this pregnancy and an energy-boost for postpartum time! Thanks for the reminder about smoothies- a fun way to get those servings of fruit in and still feel like it's a treat. :)

  20. Ok, don't hate me but I LOVED being pregnant! I was sooo huge but felt like a walking Christmas present. That being said, I was horribly ill the first 3 months of each pregnancy. I was so ill that I couldn't go to the grocery without excusing myself a few times to get sick in the parking lot. Not fun! The things that helped me get through were red hots and smelling lemons. I tried it all and these were the only two things that helped ease my tummy. Good luck and congratulations!!!

  21. Definitely filing these tips away ;) And I might need to try that Benefit mascara, right now the Urban Decay one is my fav. Teavana tea is the best, my brother-in-law drinks it and I've wanted to buy a strainer ever since I tried his!

  23. i found my pregnancy really hard especially the first trimester--thank you morning sickness and exhaustion. my life savers were having naps when i could and getting outside. ginger biscuits worked for a while to keep the sickness at bay but basically i just played it by ear.

  24. omgosh! I'm late, but CONGRATS!!!!! How exciting

I am currently 23 weeks pregnant (first pregnancy) and I have to say, I'm really starting to enjoy it now. Given there are still moments where I think 'what is happening! this is not comfortable' but when the moment passes and I feel him kicking and moving around, I feel like the most blessed mommy-to-be in the whole world!!! Course I'm sure this is how most women feel too haha. I have to say though, I experienced my first leg cramp in the middle of the night while I was sleeping last night....unpleasant to say the least! I found that eating regularly and not waiting for the hunger pains to kick in is WONDERFUL. And naps are a serious blessing. But I found prenatal yoga is a life saver!!! I love my prenatal yoga. It helps me relax, loosen up and really enjoy my new body.
