Saying goodbye to an Angel on Earth.

(via etsy artist sgmtucker)

Have you ever lost a loved one to cancer??
We lost an angel yesterday....my Aunt Amy had been battling skin cancer for a few years now and we all hoped and prayed for a miracle. You never want your family member to be the one that loses the battle...especially someone like her. She was the oldest of ten in my mom's family, who are all very close to each other. She had the voice of an angel, and the spirit of  a saint. She sang many weekends for weddings. And when she sang on my wedding day... she made the Wedding Mass a heavenly experience. It was her gift to her family...to ALL of us nieces and nephews. In fact, one of my favorite memories of my wedding day was when I heard her sing the Deer's Cry right before I went to walk down the aisle. It is hard to know how much her children and husband will suffer in having her gone, and selfishly, I think we all wish she could have cheated death. Don't you HATE CANCER?!! ....But in reality, we all have a time that only God knows on earth, and  she can finally rest pain free in the arms of her creator.

I am having a hard time being miles and miles away from all my family and being VERY pregnant and unable to fly anywhere. I don't know how I will get to the funeral.... My eyes are a little swollen today. She was such an incredible person, and we loved her very much. Please if you have a moment, lift a prayer up for all of our family today!

If I could, I would be sending these bouquets of flowers to heaven(purple was her favorite color :) ...And the gift of song she gave to me on my wedding day, I want to give back to her:

The Deer's Cry:
I arise today

Through the strength of heaven:

Light of sun,

Radiance of moon,

Splendour of fire,

Speed of lightning,

Swiftness of wind,

Depth of sea,

Stability of earth,

Firmness of rock.

I arise to-day
Through God's strength to pilot me:

God's eyes to look before me,

God's wisdom to guide me,

God's way to lie before me,

God's shield to protect me,

From all who shall wish me ill,

Afar and anear,

Alone and in a multitude.

Against every cruel merciless power that may oppose my body and soul

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,

Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me....

  2. So sorry for your loss Anna - there is really nothing harder than losing a loved one and I can't imagine how you must feel being unable to fly.

But she sounds like a wonderful woman and I'm sure she's in heaven now and knows exactly what you're feeling.

    Hang in there.

  10. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my mom almost 3 years ago to cancer after a long battle. I can't say I know what it's like, because every situation is different, but I can relate. My biggest encouragement is to remember the good memories. Those are what you have to hold on to and no one can take those away! My prayers are with you and your family!

It's always so hard to say good-bye to a loved one - I lost my father-in-law on my birthday 14 years ago yesterday and every year I'm reminded of that heartbreaking day. 38. Anna - So sorry to hear of your loss! You and your family are in my thoughts.

Yes, I too HATE CANCER! I lost my dad a few years ago and now I fight almost every day (in some small or large way) to help with cancer research. I have a great network of friends that have all been affected. It is sad at how many there are out there.

    Stay strong. *Carrie

  42. Oh darling, I am so sorry to hear this. Please know my thoughts are with you and your family. The song is a wonderful tribute, not only because she sang it to your wedding, but it somehow seems fitting... From a family of ten, there must have been SO MUCH LOVE to share.

Stay strong, and I sincerely hope you have the opportunity to go to the funeral. This may sound cheesy, but is there any way to web-cam it if you are unable to go in person?

    HUGS sweetie, BIG HUGS.

  46. Anna :( I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your Aunt Amy. The least and best I can do is send up prayers her way so that she will be with our Creator soon. She has certainly served our Lord here on Earth, and I am sure there is a place for her waiting in Heaven.

Whether you make it to her funeral or not, I hope you find/create a small ritual to honor her passing from this world to the next. This post is a great start :)

  50. Oh Anna, I'm so sorry for your family's profound loss! My family lost one of our own brave members to cancer nearly a month ago and I have had writer's block ever since. Reading your tribute has helped give me some peace, and I am so thankful to you for that. I hope you are able to find a way to attend, though I'm sure your aunt is up in heaven knowing how much you love her.

  55. What a beautiful song. I love the lines...
"Against every cruel merciless power that may oppose my body and soul

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,

Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me...."

Your aunt was obviously a strong woman in Christ.
I lost my grandfather to cancer a few years ago and it was a very difficult thing to watch, but he was a strong man in Christ too. There is one thing I do know - I will see him again one day and I will rejoice then.
Praying for you at this difficult time.

  56. Anna, this is so sad and i'm sorry for your loss. i'm sure her harmonious spirit will continue to touch you all, every day in so many ways. it's a blessing the family is a large one, to me that means that even though she is gone from this realm, she definitely lives on with each of her sibs.

i can only imagine how you're feeling right now, trying to do the day to day, prepping for your new baby and all else. be easy on yourself if you can't make it for the funeral, you have to know the family would support you and understand. your baby's birth will bring much happiness in the upcoming months and these stories/memories that you can share as they grow will also be a nurturing thing for you. bless you lades.

i did lose my dad to cancer, he was given 6 mo's and almost to the day is when he passed on. there is something about knowing this beforehand, so in a way i'm glad (if that's the right word) that you all "knew" of a possible outcome. hope that's okay to say here and now when this time is especially tender. i only mean it in the best, most loving way. ♥
